Local Manufacturer Takes Steps To Protect Workers From Virus Exposure

first_imgShare:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window),I work there, there aren’t any protective measures at all other than a ply wood quarantine room. All doors entering the plant do not have hand sanitization areas, central core which is like a small vending area where hundreds of people touch food products, chairs, and a touch screen for purchasing food is only cleaned once a night. Do not be fooled by the illusions of Cummins. The only employees they are “protecting” are the useless management teams who are working from home, as for everyone on the floor working directly next to one another well good luck to them because apparently production means more than employee health and well being.,Please make suggestions to your manager. I am not sure what measures you are expecting.,Cummins is not an essential business; therefore should have to shut down like everyone else. They have way to many people on one area, as well as deliveries coming in and out all day from all over! It’s not right! There working families NEED to be a priority!!!,Our plant is like a ghost town in the offices they are all working from home, parking is a breeze though. But the hourly workers are forced to stand in line so as to heard through one entrance to be asked three ridiculous questions so much for social distancing! We have several employees that are home under quarantine that worked side by side with us. In a meeting we were told we would be given time off if there were any instances of corona virus, well the company lied and now they are telling us the country needs us and we have a civic duty to keep the plant running. Corporate greed don’t you think?,@Doug is definitely a cop. I bet you read all the terms and conditions on every website you come across and kiss your father on the mouth as a grown adult. For real though Doug, how do you benefit from supporting corporate greed over being humane to employees who bust their ass for that company day after day? Not sure what you gain punishing the little guys by siding with the big ones. Pretty sure Diesel engines that won’t even go in chassis for months can wait until after the pandemic calms down and the paranoia has subsided. I hope you’re at least one of the big wigs who makes some sort of portion of this greed, and not just a 90-percenter who still thinks the 1% gives a damn about you.But rock on, Doug. Hope you’re never put in the same position as these guys.,How many N95 respiratory masks are being made available to Jamestown employees. If Cummins is helping build emergency needed engines are they donating them to emergency areas? Can a list of these emergency areas be published so Chautauqua county residents can know what help we are giving the world due this crisis? Definitely would like to see credit given for the great sacrifices being made. WNY News Now File Image.LAKEWOOD – One of Chautauqua County’s largest manufacturing plants is taking steps to protect its workers from novel Coronavirus exposure.Cummins Engine Plant, in a post on the company’s website, says they are working to implement internal health and safety policies to protect their employees.“Our highest priority is the health and safety of our employees,” the company said in the post.  “Employees in many impacted areas are working from home in those functions where this can be accomplished.”The company says they are providing protective wear and disinfection supplies for employees working on-site, and ensuring the sanitation and disinfection of Cummins facilities regularly. Furthermore, Cummins says they currently have region-specific travel bans in place as well as a global travel restriction. Visits by external parties such as customers and suppliers to Cummins facilities may be limited.“We continue to assess these policies as conditions evolve to ensure the health and safety of our employees,” the company says.Recently, the company provided more than 500,000 protective masks to Cummins employees in China during the virus outbreak.last_img read more

Saving Trees.

first_imgTrees Struggle to Survive For a tree to survive a dry period, it needs about 2 gallons of water per day for every inch of trunk diameter (measured at 4.5 feet above the ground). For example, a 10-inch diameter tree would need 20 gallons of water per day. Distribute this amount of water under the crown of the tree. Provide drainage with the watering, as trees don’t survive long in stagnant soils. Apply survival-level water every three days when it hasn’t rained to recharge the soil water. Don’t water daily, especially on heavy soils. Some excessively well-drained soils may need more frequent watering. Apply water in the evening to minimize evaporation loss. As the next group walked onto that green the rain became much heavier accompanied by a background of loud claps of thunder. Then, as flashes of lightning seemed to be getting closer, the hooter sounded, warning everyone to evacuate the course. Healthy Lunches For a Happier Life

first_imgTHE IMPORTANCE OF a healthy school lunch cannot be emphasized enough. Students, especially young children whose bodies are reaching key stages of development, need the correct vitamins and nutrients to stay energized and focused throughout the long school day. It is very important that students are fueled properly and practice healthy eating habits from a young age. These behaviors will carry into adulthood and have a dramatic influence on the rest of their lives.According to Lisa Testa, a holistic nutritional consultant of Healthier You, a healthy lunch consists of fruits, vegetables and a lean protein, either nut-based or meat-based, such as turkey or chicken. She also noted that it is much better to pair the meal with water rather than a sugary soda or juice. The aim is to craft a lunch that is “well-rounded and creates sustainable energy,” said Testa. Some specific examples she provided are soup in a thermos, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich – with natural peanut butter and sugar free jelly – and turkey with lettuce and tomato on whole grain bread. These lunches, rounded out with a fruit and vegetable snack such as snap peas, carrot sticks or bell peppers, are just a few of the many well-balanced choices available. The key to providing students with lunches that are both healthy and tasty is replacing unhealthy elements with better alternatives that children will still enjoy. Overly sugary, fatty and processed foods lead to an unhealthy rise and fall in blood sugar and usually can be substituted for a more nutritious option. Treats do not need to be avoided completely; rather, they should be viewed as a special occurrence instead of an everyday staple.Testa also encouraged the use of organic fruits and vegetables to stay away from as many harmful pesticides as possible. This can be expensive, however, so it is important to prioritize what to buy organically. For example, a banana’s thick skin helps protects the fruit from dangerous chemicals while buying fruits such as grapes and berries organically should be more carefully considered. Prices vary at different markets as well, so it may be more beneficial to buy produce at some stores than others.Providing healthy options for students is vital to the success and well-being of children. “It completely changes your demeanor,” said Testa regarding the importance of good nutrition. “Your attentiveness, your energy and your mood all depend on the quality of what you eat.”Easy swaps, such as whole grain bread instead of white or fruit instead of candy, can make a big difference. Healthy lifestyles can begin at any age, so why not start as early as possible?“We all know that it is important to give your school-aged children healthy lunches because their growing bodies require the nutrients, but developing healthy eating habits is just as important,” said Tori Sickles, marketing manager of Sickles Market. Markets like Sickles often offer boxed lunches “to help provide quick, healthy alternatives when Moms and Dads are too busy to make their own.” By Claire Toomeylast_img read more

Springboks start gearing up for ‘very big year’

first_img22 May 2014Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer will evaluate a squad of 36 players when the first national training camp of 2014 takes place in Durban from 25 to 28 May. The squad, announced earlier this week by the South African Rugby Union, includes veteran World Cup winners Victor Matfield and Schalk Burger. On the other side of the coin, eight uncapped players were named, including S’bura Sithole of the Cell C Sharks, former South African Sevens Player of the Year Cornal Hendricks and Marnitz Boshoff from the Lions, the Toyota Cheetahs’ Lood de Jager and Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje, Marcel van der Merwe and Jacques du Plessis from the Vodacom Bulls, and Damien De Allende from the DHL Stormers. An interesting selection was that of Cheetahs’ flank Heinrich Brussow, not so much based on his performances, which have been very good, but based on his smaller size, which is not typical of the bigger players usually favoured by Meyer.‘Hungry for test rugby’Discussing the selection of Matfield and Burger, Meyer said in a statement: “Victor and Schalk have been out of rugby for a long time. They’ve really been in great form recently and the fact that they have not been with the Boks for more than two years has made them hungry for test rugby yet again.“It’s great to welcome them back into the Springbok fold and I know both of them can still add a lot of value to the team with the Rugby World Cup in 2015 looming.“I’m also looking forward to working with Heinrich for the first time. He’s been playing very well for the Toyota Cheetahs since returning from injury and brings a lot of experience.“However, the message to every player in this training squad is clear – everyone must accelerate in each area from the first moment we are together as a team and that inclusion in this squad is no guarantee of selection.”Tried and tested? With the South African Super Rugby teams, apart from the table-topping Sharks, all in the bottom half of the standings, the form shown by the country’s franchises has been lower than what would have been hoped for, leading some to speculate that Meyer could turn to the tried and tested when the first Springbok team of the year, to play the World XV on 7 June, is announced. The coach said injuries have been a concern, but they have allowed other players to press their claims for selection. There are also a number of players in the squad who are still nursing niggles or who recently returned from long-term injuries.“It looks like most of the guys are improving weekly and a few new players have put up their hands, which is good to see with the first match of the season, against the World XV in Cape Town, only a few weeks away,” said Meyer.“It’s also very encouraging to see a bunch of new players emerging from Vodacom Super Rugby. This camp will provide us with a great opportunity to work with these players before the squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series is finalised. I am looking forward to work with these players for the first time.‘A very big year for us’“This is a very big year for us,” he added, “and the players know they will have to step up a gear, be sharp and focused from the moment we get going in Durban.“We have 14 very challenging matches ahead in 2014 and it’s imperative that we build on what was a good season last year.”Eye on the 2015 Rugby World CupLooking at the big picture, Meyer continued: “It’s important that we start building continuity because there are just 18 matches left until the Rugby World Cup starts. But it’s just as important to recognise continuous good form. We also have a number of players struggling with injury niggles or returning from injury which we have to assess.”Only one overseas-based players was included in the forthcoming camp. Japan- based scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, who played for the Springboks in 2013, was invited to the camp in Durban as he is available for the Castle Lager Incoming Series against Wales and Scotland, as well as against the Samsung-sponsored World XV.SPRINGBOK TRAINING SQUADForwards: Tendai Mtawarira, Trevor Nyakane, Marcel van der Merwe, Jannie du Plessis, Frans Malherbe, Coenie Oosthuizen, Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Victor Matfield, Flip van der Merwe, Heinrich Brussow, Marcell Coetzee, Siya Kolisi, Willem Alberts, Jacques du Plessis, Teboho Mohoje, Duane Vermeulen, Schalk BurgerBacks: Fourie du Preez, Francois Hougaard, Johan Goosen, Marnitz Boshoff, Jean de Villiers, Damian De Allende, Jan Serfontein, Juan de Jongh, JJ Engelbrecht, S’bura Sithole, Frans Steyn, Lwazi Mvovo, Bjorn Basson, JP Pietersen, Cornal Hendricks, Willie le RouxSAinfo reporter and SA Rugbylast_img read more

US retail sales rose for 2nd month led by cars clothes

first_imgWASHINGTON – U.S. retail sales rose at a solid pace last month, as bullish consumers bought more cars, furniture and clothes.Retail sales increased 0.2 per cent in October, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, after a healthy 1.9 per cent gain in the previous month. September’s gain was the largest in 2 1/2 years and was driven by big increases in auto and gas sales in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.Americans are spending more freely as confidence in the economy has jumped in the past year and the unemployment rate is at a 17-year low. Excluding gas station sales, which fell sharply as prices dropped, retail sales rose 0.4 per cent last month.Sales gains were widespread. Consumers spent more at electronics, grocery, clothing and sporting goods stores. Restaurants and bars reported a healthy 0.8 per cent increase, the biggest gain since January.Americans are boosting their spending, but incomes are rising only modestly. That has pushed more people to borrow to finance their purchases, particularly of autos. That has renewed worried about whether U.S. households can stay on top of their burgeoning debt loads.Auto loans and credit card debt rose sharply in the July-September quarter, according to a report Tuesday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That pushed total household debt to a record high of nearly $13 trillion. The proportion of Americans falling behind on their credit card bills rose to 4.6 per cent, the New York Fed said, up from 4.4 per cent a year earlier. The share of auto loans that are 90 days or more overdue rose to 2.4 per cent from 2.3 per cent. Still, low interest rates mean that U.S. households’ debt payments, on average, aren’t historically high.Gas station sales fell 1.2 per cent last month, the retail sales report showed, mostly because prices nationwide dropped 2.4 per cent. That is a reversal from September, when gas prices spiked 13 per cent in the wake of the hurricanes, which disrupted refineries on the Gulf Coast.Auto sales rose 0.7 per cent, a solid gain after a huge jump of 4.6 per cent in September. Sales are likely still elevated by the impact of the hurricanes, which destroyed thousands of cars in Texas and Florida that are steadily being replaced.last_img read more
