first_imgOpen Until FilledYes Grant funded position?No Reporting to Associate Dean for Collections, Discovery &Budget, the Head, Metadata and Discovery provides leadership andstrategic direction of the department.Manages and directs staff in the creation of metadata andcataloging in all formats. Creates, documents, manages, and refinescataloging and metadata workflows for materials including, but notlimited to, print and electronic monographs, series, standingorders, serials, digital collections and media. Proposes andmonitors vendor services that facilitate processing and delivery ofinformation resources. Provides staff training in metadatadescription and cataloging. Manages and reports metrics forassessment and external reporting. Directs bibliographic andauthority maintenance activities, ensuring database quality andaccuracy. Supervises three librarians, five staff members, andstudent workers.The Head, Metadata and Discovery is an essential member of thedivision’s leadership team and is expected to play an integral rolein the success of division-wide operations. As a member of the VCULibraries’ management council, the position will work withdepartment head colleagues across the libraries to advancestrategic initiatives.The Head, Metadata and Discovery is expected to be activeprofessionally and to contribute to developments in the field.Faculty with the VCU Libraries are evaluated, and promoted, on thebasis of job performance, scholarship, and professional developmentand service. Required Qualifications At least three years of increasingly responsible professionalcataloging and metadata practice and managerial supervisoryexperience in an academic or research library.Comprehensive knowledge of and experience guiding others inapplying cataloging principles and standards, including RDA, AACR2,LC- PCC PSs, MARC and non- MARC metadata schemas.Experience with NACO, BIBCO or other PCC programs. Familiarity withemerging standards and initiatives, such as BIBFRAME, RDF, andlinked data.Experience guiding others in creating original as well as copybibliographic records, with OCLC Connexion, national bibliographicutilities, integrated library systems, vendor cataloging services,ebook management, authority control services, and automatedroutines for bibliographic maintenance.Knowledge of languages in addition to English.Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.Experience at urban research institutions, HBCU or minority servinginstitutions is desired.
